Combined traceroute and ping

Investigates the network connection between the current host and hostname by sending packets with purposly low TTLs. It notes the response time of the intervening routers.
Displays the response percentage and response times of the route to hostname.
A sudden increase in packetloss or response time is often an indication of a bad (or overloaded) link.

Some routers give a lower priority to ICMP ECHO packets than to other network traffic. The reliability of these routers will be significantly lower than the actual reliability of these routers.

-c count
--report-cycles count
Number of pings sent lasting one second.
-s bytes
-psize bytes
(or packetsize on the commandline)
set the packet size (in Bytes inclusive IP and ICMP headers)
If set to a negative number, every iteration will use a different, random packetsize up to that number.
-p
--split
Produce format suitable for a split-user interface.
-l
--raw
use the raw output format. better suited for archival of the measurement results. It could be parsed to be presented into any of the other display methods.
-i seconds
--interval seconds
the positive number of seconds between ICMP ECHO requests. The default is one second.
-n
--no-dns
display numeric IP numbers and not resolve the host names. Perhaps faster.
-r
--report
run for -c seconds,then display statistics and exit.
Generates a significant amount of network traffic.
-a ip.add.re.ssi
--address ip.add.re.ss
Bind outgoing packets' socket to a specific interface, so that any packet will be sent through this interface. doesn't apply to DNS requests .
-v --version Display the version ID
-t
--curses
to use the curses based terminal interface
-g
--gtk
use the GTK+ based X11 window interface GTK+ must have been available on the system when mtr was built
-4 Use IPv4 only.
-6 Use IPv6 only.

  p       pause (SPACE to resume)
  d       switching display mode
  e       toggle MPLS information on/off
  n       toggle DNS on/off
  r       reset all counters
  o str   set the columns to display, default str='LRS N BAWV'
  j       toggle latency(LS NABWV)/jitter(DR AGJMXI) stats
  c    report cycle n, default n=infinite

  i    set the ping interval to n seconds, default n=1
  f    set the initial time-to-live(ttl),  default n=1
  m    set the max time-to-live,           default n= # of hops
  s    set the packet size to n or random(n<0)
  b    set ping bit pattern to c(0..255) or random(c<0)

MTR uses the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Time Exceeded (type 11, code 0) packets coming back from routers, or ICMP Echo Reply packets when the packets have hit their destination host.
User Datagram Protocol (UDP) mode (-u or pressing u) sends UDP packets. The time to live (TTL) field in the IP header increasing by one for each probe sent, toward the destination host.
In UDP mode MTR relies on ICMP port unreachable packets (type 3, code 3) when the destination is reached.

MTR displays a dynamically updating list of routers traversed, and the average round-trip time as well as packet loss
